Happy New Year!

January 1, 2011 by kianhong

We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called “Opportunity” and its first chapter is New Year’s Day. ~ Edith Lovejoy Pierce ~

Don’t look at me like that. I caught YOU!!!

January 1, 2011 by kianhong

My sudden appearance surprised them and caught them off guard for sure. I just like the way this little creature on the right look at me. Did you see those tiny things on their fingers? Yes, wild berries! They were having so much fun. I really miss those childhood days where I used to roam [...]

I want to talk about taking portraits

December 29, 2010 by kianhong

I have spent 2 weeks in Vietnam, where I started from Hoi An, then Hue, Hanoi and further north to Sapa. During the course of my journey, I photographed many people — street vendor, fish monger, novice monk, barber, children, coffee beans seller, old man, Black Hmong, Red Dzao and countless of other interesting [...]

The montagnards and their umbrellas

December 21, 2010 by kianhong

It was raining almost day and night. Out on the street, I saw people carrying their umbrellas and wearing rain coats, fully geared for the bad weather. For most eager travellers who came all the way from different parts of the world to visit Sapa, it made no sense to hide inside the hotel’s rooms. Fake North Face jackets were sold like hot cakes, thanks to the desperate tourists [...]

逃亡

December 19, 2010 by kianhong

Flower H’mong Tribe 花赫蒙族

December 2, 2010 by kianhong

Bac Ha Sunday Market host the largest and the most interesting fair in the mountainous region of Northwestern Vietnam. This is the meeting place where all the nearby villagers and hill tribes come to eat, to shop, to trade and to meet friends. But the most amazing sight to see here has to be colorful dresses that [...]

Uphill Task

November 28, 2010 by kianhong

(A local heading back home after collecting wood from the nearby forest)   I have been very busy lately and have totally overstretched my body. My body starts complaining by sending me some very ”painful” signals. I ask myself whether it’s worth doing so much where no rewards are to be seen at the expense of [...]

The girl

November 22, 2010 by kianhong

I met this mysterious girl while I was wandering in Sin Chai village. Her colorful costume drew my attention. Yet, I couldn’t tell which tribe she belongs to. Black H’mong, Flower H’mong and Red Dzao people are easily identified. But this beautiful girl’s dressing just doesn’t give me much clue. I waved at her and [...]
